As we celebrate the news of Boeing, Timken and Mack Molding making investments and adding jobs in the Palmetto State, we must support activities that ensure a productive workforce for those companies to succeed. On Wednesday (Nov. 18), two dozen career counselors from Spartanburg-area schools attended a special field trip to learn about modern manufacturing jobs. They visited three local manufacturers that described the skills and attributes they are looking for in new hires and led them on tours of their operations. It was an eye-opening experience as they heard how jobs can pay upwards of $20 an hour, in addition to benefits and bonuses. They heard about building technical skills through training and apprenticeship programs that lead to professional advancement. Many who spoke to the educators had worked for their companies for more than 10 years and demonstrated firsthand the value of doing what you love. The educators were also told that many of our young people are not measuring up – lacking interpersonal skills, proper attire, and sometimes, appropriate hygiene to make it through the interview process. At Lear Corporation, they watched as workers covered seats that would go into new BMWs. They marveled at the enormous variety of products that Milliken produces for consumer, medical and military markets. And they eagerly talked with associates at SEW Eurodrive about using math everyday in running robots that make gears used by companies across the world. Hopefully, these educators will bring that knowledge and excitement back to their classrooms as they play a vital role in helping students and their families better understand the variety of existing career opportunities. By exposing more people to today’s manufacturing sector, we can build the future workforce needed to keep South Carolina competitive and prosperous for many generations to come.
